A trip to General Santos City

We left Cagayan de oro city at 2:30 AM. The weather was good and my uncle let me drive because I said i will drive on bukidnon cause I already know the route in Bukidnon. nWe are going to General Santos City To attend the wedding of my cousin Adrian Beltran. I drive my ubncles Honda City and when we are at Ipasug-ong Bukidnon one of our rear tire got flat so we change tire and my uncle said he will drive so I sit on the front seat with my mother and my aunt at the backseat. It was a nice trip with the views so good when the sun started to rise in Valencia bukidnon. I enjoy the nice scenery on the musuan peak and I noticed that my uncle did not notice an aisle at the front gate of CMU and he hit it and the car flew to the air and landed very near to the next isle. He applied for a brake when he noticed the center aisle but it too late because the traffic sign was not there to give us warning that it was an aisle. When the car stopped many people come to us checking if we were alright. we found out that the rear tire was flat so I ride a habalhabal to dulogon to let our flat spare tire be vulcanized. While on the vulcanizing shop it was the time that I feel nervous and i noticed that my knees are shaking. We change tire and my uncle check his car for damage but it was only slight so we decided to continue our trip. My uncle let me drive and I was on the driver seat for almost ten hours and we arrive at Gen San at 2:30 PM because we wasted and hour because we were lost on our route to Digos City and we follow the road to Cotabato. We rush to a hotel and get dressed because the wedding ceremony will start at 3:00 O clock. We then went to the church and we got there on time. It was a solemn ceremony and its nice to see them make their vows. We wnt to the reception and i felt so happy to see my cousin's face very happy on his wedding day. I wish them all the luck!!!

Our trip back in Cagayan De oro was very enjoying because we buy fruits and we take pics on views and sights on our way home. I wished that the people from DPWH will check on the missing traffic sign that will warn travellers on the center aisle in front of CMU. If that will be left their without a warning sign then many accidents will still happen there.

Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral Cagayan de oro city

Let us take a glimpse of the religious side of cagayan de oro city. The City's history dates back many centuries before the Spaniards came to Cagayan when the territory was called Kalambagohan. Its main town, Himologan, was a hill-top fortress situated some eight kilometers south of the present Poblacion. At the time when the first Spanish missionaries came in 1622, the people of Cagayan had tributary relation to Kudarat, the Muslim Sultan of Maguindanao empire in Cotabato. However, the people had not embraced Islam and instead, many became Christians after sometime. Because of this, Muslim warriors began to attack the settlement. As a defense strategy, the priests persuaded the people to transfer from the hilltop to a better location which is the present site of the Saint Augustine Cathedral. The Cagayanons were able to defend themselves for almost 250 years from Muslim harassment. In 1738, Spanish dominance was felt in Cagayan. When Misamis gained status of province in 1818, one of its four districts was the Partidos de Cagayan. In 1871, the "Partidos" became a town and was made permanent capital of Misamis. In 1883, the town became seat of the Spanish government in Mindanao for the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte. Consequently, from a purely farming-fishing area, Cagayan emerged into a booming commerce and trade center. The war years in Cagayan were prompted by the presence of the Americans in 1898. The Americans were initially and successfully repulsed by the local forces led by Major Apolinar Velez at the historic battle of Macahambus in June 4, 1900. After the troubled years, peace finally brought back the economic activities to normal under the guidance of Americans. St. Augustine School, the forerunner of the present Xavier University and of Lourdes College, was inaugurated in 1928. On June 15, 1950 President Elpidio Quirino signed Republic Act No. 521, which granted the status of a chartered city to the municipality of Cagayan de Oro. Following these events, the socio-economic order underwent some far-reaching changes. Activities grew in scale and importance until it developed as the administrative center for the entire Northern Mindanao (Region X and XIII). Today, Cagayan de Oro is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and was declared a “Highly Urbanized City” by the Ministry of Local Government last November 22, 1983.

Coconut Crab in Cagayan de oro

Maybe you wonder what is this strange creature is. It is nowhere to be found here in the Cagayn de oro city. This is from the island of Batanes brought here by my uncle who just came back from their Summer vacation from Batanes. The coconut crabs (Birgus latro) are also known as "tatus" in Batanes, Philippines, which literally means ‘palm thief’. They are a popular delicacy in the locality because of its delicious taste. They are being cooked by boiling but sometimes they also use sauce and other seasonings. The coconut crab climbs trees to eat coconuts or fruit, to escape the heat or to escape predators. It is a common perception that the coconut crab cuts the coconuts from the tree to eat them on the ground . Coconut crabs cut holes into coconuts with their strong claws and eat the contents; this behavior is unique in the animal kingdom. In the 1980s, Holger Rumpf was able to confirm a report, observing and studying how the crabs open coconuts in the wild. The animal has developed a special technique to do so: if the coconut is still covered with husk, it will use its claws to rip off strips, always starting from the side with the three germination pores, the group of three small circles found on the outside of the coconut. Once the pores are visible, the crab will bang its pincers on one of them until they break. Afterwards, it will turn around and use the smaller pincers on its other legs to pull out the white flesh of the coconut. Using their strong claws, larger individuals can even break the hard coconut into smaller pieces for easier consumption. But do not worry this coconu crabs will not be cooked for food because my uncle plans to make an artificial habitat for it so that many Ivatan children here in Mindanao specially in Malinao, Kalilangan, Bukidnon can see a real live coconut crab.

The Black Nazarene of CDO

Here in the city we have the replica or "callejeron" of the famous Black Nazarene icon which was given by the Quiapo Basilica to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.Msgr. Monsanto head of the archdiocese of Cagayan de oro said the image is not only a gift to the parish but also to the people of Mindanao who are besieged with a continuing unstable peace and order condition and uncertainties brought about by the global financial crisis. This is the only replica of its kind in the entire Mindanao region. The image is now housed in the Jesus Nazareno Parish Church, adjacent to Gaisano Mall. It has become a pilgrimage site for devotees of the Black Nazarene from all over Mindanao. The Jesus Nazareno Parish Church will celebrate its feast every January 9. All activities will be done simultaneously with the events in Manila.

Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan

The most prestigious school here in Cagayan de oro city is Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan opened in 1933 with just 17 pupils enrolled in first year high school. It was founded by Fr. James T.G. Hayes S.J. who later became the first archbishop of the Cagayan de Oro Archdiocese, the first archdiocese in Mindanao. Its humble school building was a two-storey wooden affair, formerly the St. Augustine Parochial School established in 1928, on Burgos Street.Cagayan, then with a population of around 50,000, had the finest port in Mindanao and was a fast-growing town. Gradually, the school grew with the community and opened college courses in June 1938, and Grades five to seven in June 1940 to accommodate requests from parents all over Mindanao and Visayas.

Continuing to be of and in the society the university is progressing with, it has established institutions that not only provide additional exposure to its students and staff but also extend assistance to sectors and communities in need.In 1957, the Research Institute for Mindanao Culture (RIMCU) was established to study Mindanao, its culture, issues and concerns. The Southeast Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (SEARSOLIN), formed in 1963, trains leaders from various countries in agricultural work grounded on present developments. Proud of its heritage, Xavier University has its own museum, Museo de Oro¸ which was started in 1968. Reminding the present generation of the humble beginnings of the university and its bigger community, it is home to an exhibit of previous and prevailing folk beliefs in Mindanao, artifacts found at Huluga Cave which date back to 377 A.D., and three of the remaining copies of the menu of the 1898 presidential banquet of Emilio Aguinaldo in Malolos Bulacan.

Presently, the university is composed of four campuses – the Manresa Complex, which is the main training grounds of the College of Agriculture and which also houses the SEARSOLIN, the Sustaining Agriculture Center, Appropriate Technology Center, and the Food Technology Center; the High School and Grade School annex in Pueblo de Oro; the Grade School campus in Macasandig; and the College campus along Corrales Street. But more than its physical expansion, the key to its success as an academic institution throughout the years had always been its thrust to instill in its students and staff its commitment to be of the people, for the people and with the people. And its biggest accomplishment, beyond all academic achievements, is still its continuing tradition of producing men and women for others.
Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan) is a Filipino, Catholic and Jesuit academic community dedicated to the integral development of the person for the needs of Mindanao and the country. As a University, Xavier pursues truth and excellence in teaching, research and service to communities: it is concerned with contemporary problems; it prepares men and women with competencies, skills and a keen sense of responsibility to their communities. As a Filipino university, Xavier is committed to the appreciation, preservation and enrichment of the Filipino culture and heritage as well as the welfare and sustainable development of the Filipino people. As a Catholic university, Xavier fosters in its members a deep personal commitment to Jesus Christ manifested by loyalty to the Church and a life of witness and loving service characterized by a preferential option for the poor.As a Jesuit university, Xavier acknowledges its historical linkages with the Society of Jesus and is rooted in Ignatian spirituality and an educational tradition of liberal education which today includes technology and the various professions and affirms the importance and necessity of cooperation among Jesuits and the laity in mission. In sum, Xavier University seeks to form men and women of competence, conscience, and commitment in service of the Church and the Filipino people.

Macahambus Cave and Gorge

It was a weekend when i decided to visit One of the most famous sight here in the city is The Macahambus Cave and Gorge is an underground cave with a 130-foot circular gorge. It is located in Lumbia, a few kilometers south of the airport. This is the most popular and most frequently visited cave in Cagayan de Oro City. The ravine is thick with various species of plants and huge trees. It is the site of the historical battle between. This was the site of famous Battle of Macahambus Hill which took place on June 4, 1900, the first Filipino victory against the Americans. The cave itself is a picturesque spot. Today, it’s a short cavern leads to a veranda that overlooks the meandering Cagayan River below. 200 meters away is the Macahambus Gorge. This is actually the steep precipice where the enemy forces fell to their deaths. Today, a flight of over a hundred steps leads one down to the floor of the gorge where there is an underground river that comes out from one cave to another cave. The cave is covered with a lush tropical arbor of forest growth. It was a 30 minute ride with my Motorbike from the city proper. I was a native here in the city but i9t was my first time since birth that I have seen this very beautiful and a historical site. I wonder why it was never introduced by my schools. If not by the power of Internet that I learn and know more about this place.

Human Statue - Dire Husi

It was a Saturday evening when I decided to stroll with my Kid Tebor in the DV Soria Night Cafe. We roamed around looking at the Items for sale and food to eat and something caught my attention. It was a crowd drawing group playing native musical instruments with one person painted his body with silver and standing in the middle of a crowd as if he is a statue a human statue. One can take pic and a donation for their cause is expected. I put my ten Peso coin in their box for my appreciation of their artistic idea in drawing crowd. We enjoy our stroll at the park and we went home. I opened my PC and search on the net and know more about the group. This group named themselves Dire Jose Initiatives. Established in 2004, “Dire” is a Visayan word for “here” and “Husi“ is a Manobo word for “friend.” Dire Husi is an organization of indigenous and out-of-school young people in Northern Mindanao. Based in Cagayan de Oro City, the group runs a social enterprise that creates and sells indigenous-inspired terracotta accessories, musical instruments, and soil paintings. Dire Husi also performs “enthralling and upbeat" world music that fuses indigenous chants and rhythms with contemporary beats. Dire Husi believes in Fair Trade. It adheres to the principles of self-help, social equity, and ecological sustainability. For more about Dire Husi visit their site at my blog list.

The Hovawart Dog in CDO

James is believed to be the only one of its kind here in the Philippines. It was brought here by my Uncle Dieter Sokoll a German Citizen who is now residing here in Cagayan de oro city last September 2009.
The Hovawart is a German dog breed. The name of the breed means "an estate guard dog," which is the original use for the breed. The breed originated in the Black Forest region and was first described in text and paintings in medieval times.
The Hovawart does exceptionally well in search and rescue, tracking and working dog activities. The females are generally lighter in build and often love agility. In training and especially obedience work the trainer must keep positive reinforcement in mind all the time, as the Hovawart is not as eager to please as many other working dog breeds: it always needs some kind of motivation. It is important to realize that the Hovawart works with you and not for you. They do have the ability to think and act independently. Their guarding instinct for example does not require any real training; it is inherent, as it is what they were bred for. The Hovawart may easily become reluctant if training is built only on punishments.
James have mated with our German Shepherd Gina. The result are 9 lovely and cute puppies. They are 12 weeks old by now. (5) Five are for sale. Complete with Vaccines. For more information please call or txt to: Gil 0916 9174034 or Bheng 0926 8084607
